New Jersey Child Support Lawyer
Every parent has the obligation to support his or her children. In principle, the vast majority of parents agree with that statement and have no reservations about paying child support. In practice, there are many stress points in the determination of child support and its interplay with other aspects of the relationship between parents.
I am divorce and family law attorney Leonard A. Weitzman. After practicing as a lawyer in New Jersey for more than 28 years, I recognize that every family situation is unique. I help divorcing and unmarried parents through the initial determination of child support, and I assist them later with any necessary changes to child support or enforcement issues.
For seasoned legal counsel that protects your interests and those of your children, contact me online or call (908) 333-4198. I am happy to provide an initial consultation at my Bridgewater, New Jersey, law offices.
Seasoned Counsel, Smart Representation
The central issue at stake in child support is promoting the best interests of the children. New Jersey law assumes that all children are entitled to benefit from the income of both parents and that both parents must provide for them.
In New Jersey, the amount of child support to be paid is generally based on the New Jersey Child Support Guidelines. These payment guidelines consider a number of factors, such as:
- The number of children the mother and father share
- The income of both parents
- If either parent was previously married or has other children, the amount of any alimony or child support paid to a prior spouse or for other children
- The cost of health insurance paid by either parent
- The cost of day care paid by the custodial parent
If there is a good reason to deviate from the child support amount recommended by the child support guidelines, I can help you request that from the court. After 25 years in practice, I have a great deal of insight into what requests are likely to be granted, and I will always give you realistic advice. I will only encourage you to spend your resources on issues that are worth the time, money and effort.
I am happy to listen to your questions and provide realistic answers about divorce, creating or dissolving domestic partnerships, child support, child custody and visitation, the rights of non-custodial parents, and what happens if you need to change your child support amount or modify other family court orders in the future.
